Community of Artists

Local artists who work closely with the cafe.

Leslie Brothers: Photography

I've been a Greenbelt resident for 6 years, and have been living in the area since attending the University of Maryland in College Park many many years ago. I've spent most of my working life at the Smithsonian Institution, about half of it as a horticulturist, where I've been able to develop my photographic skills with natural subjects. I started my serious learning using film, moved on to digital a few years ago, but recently have found a new interest in old-fashioned darkroom work.

Mike McMullin: Site Painting

Paintings created by large groups of people at historical events, collaborating in an expressive activity to capture some of the feelings of that day. Micheal A. McMullin has orchestrated groups ranging from Olympic Athletes to street gangs; from corporate retreats to community outreach. Wherever there is an interesting group gathered, a "community site painter" may show up and ask them to get their message out with paint, to record the energy that brings them together, a record more personal than a sound bite, more in-depth than a photo still.

Paul Downs: Art from Nature

Nature has always offered me shelter from the fast paced world. The whirl of constant movement can be energizing but often begs for balance. As I walk in the woods, I am aware of the ease with which Mother Nature balances movement and stillness. This quality is what I try to bring into my designs. I strive to find a moment of stillness in each piece I create.

Jan Garland: Mixed-media Collage

Jan's 2007 show, "Expressions of One in Tissue Paper Collage", featured mixed-media figurative works. This self-taught artist works in tissue paper collage to create painting-like results. Included in the show were several pieces done with only recycled tissue paper from shoe boxes, stores, and gift bags - helping to reduce our landfill, if only by a slight bit!

Anita Woodruff: Photography

Anita manages the Greenbelt Photo Club, which meets on the second Tuesday of each month from 7:30 to 9pm at the Greenbelt Community Center, 15 Crescent Road, in room 112.

I fell in love with photography back in 2003 when I took my first classes at Prince George's Community College. I am partial to black and white photography and I love driving around taking pictures of unusual items. Mostly it's junk; I like the composition in black and white.
